intersex

A general, non-specific term used to describe a condition where a person is born with reproductive and/or sexual anatomy that is not mainly male or female. A chromosomal combination at birth other than XX or XY. Names of some of these conditions include: Turner Syndrome, androgen insensitivity syndrome, Klinefelter's syndrome, MRKH and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Intersex is now used in place of the outdated and offensive term “hermaphrodite”.
